Here are some Jupiter and Saturn Images made by
Hubert Paulus
in the first days of November 1999. He made these images with his
Olympus Camedia C2000 digital camera
fixed to his 6" refractor in his observing station. I took the task of image processing and
here are the results.
Jupiter
A composition of 4 images stacked and processed with unsharp masking. How did I do this ?
Jupiter - The Process
-
Cut the image out of the big frame and save as a new image (as uncompressed BMP).
In this case I increased size to 400 x 400 pixel
-
Do this with all images you have selected.
-
Stretch the brightness to maximum - an automatic function in
Paintshop Pro or GIMP
-
Save the images again.
-
Now load the images to PictureWindow 2.0
-
Read the instructions carefully. There is a document describing how to work with astrophotos
on the website.
-
If you have 4 images you may add I1 and I2 resulting to NEW1; I3 and I4 to NEW2; Then add
NEW1 and NEW2 resulting in ALL1. Use the COMPOSITE MENU and the blend function. I have good
results setting the amount to 65%.
-
Make at least 2 points fitting; three or more are better. This is not easy as you have to
zoom deep into the images to find an appropriate point. Use the preview function!
-
After you reached to ALL1 you may do some color adjust. I only use the level function.
Do not overenhance the image.
-
Now select Sharpening/Unsharp masking. Try to experiment because I cannot give a certain
value here. But Do not let the image become very rough.
-
Hereafter you have to Blur/Gaussian blur. The rough spots have to disappear. You may repeat
the Sharpen and Unsharpen procedure several times. BE CAREFUL.
-
At the end you get an image showing by far more detail than the single raw image.
-
But with all image processing you do NOT have to forget: The raw image contains all
information. If you have not exposed sharp, you cannot expect a sharp
image after processing!
Here are the steps in the progress from a single rawimage to the final result
Saturn
I processed this Saturn image in the same manner as I have shown above. These were 6
image I selected out of 9.
